EETAP is pleased to make available the following EE products and services.
Educators, non-formal educators, and community organizations will find these cases fascinating reading and a powerful tool for professional development. While the cases are grounded in the experiences of a diverse group of environmental educators, the questions and issues they raise apply to education in general and society as a whole. Each case is a candid, dramatic, and highly readable first-person account that makes concrete the challenges of fairness, expectations, respect, and communication when people who share goals, perhaps, but not cultures, interact. The ten cases arise from in-school and out-of-school settings and involve the real and perceived power relationships that cultural differences often throw into high relief. The casebook includes facilitator notes and commentary about each case. It is designed to promote rich discussion and thoughtful reflection and to develop principles of practice that users can apply to their own work or volunteer settings. It was developed by EETAP, which is funded by U.S. EPA’s Office of Environmental Education. The CD-ROM explores how teaching about the environment can be used to achieve national education standards for core disciplines such as math, science, and social studies. The CD-ROM also discusses what environmental literacy means and how it helps prepare students to effectively make environmental decisions that impact their daily lives. The CD-ROM includes 43 sample K-12 curriculum activities that demonstrate how environmental lessons can support specific grade level education standards. The CD-ROM compliments "Advancing Education through Environmental Literacy," a publication developed by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development in collaboration with EETAP. The publication focuses on how education and the environment can be linked to advance student learning. Included are descriptions of schools that are successfully implementing environmental education programs and summaries of research documenting how schools have raised test scores of their students by using the environment to help teach content in subject areas such as social studies, science, reading, and math. The guidelines describe six key characteristics that can help guide the program development process: Needs Assessment, Organizational Needs and Capacities, Program Scope and Structure, Program Delivery Resources, Program Quality and Appropriateness, and Evaluation. Each key characteristic is supported by a series of quidelines and indicators that provide greater detail. In an effort to assure that the Nonformal Guidelines reflects a widely shared understanding of environmental education, a writing team comprised of environmental education professionals from a variety of backgrounds and organizational affiliations developed the document. Drafts were circulated widely and hundreds of comments were considered and incorporated.
